John 21:25-And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

The jail cell of gentlemen that I was studying with one particular day had a lot of questions about conspiracies. JFK….aliens (not people from other countries, but extraterrestrials)….Roswell….9-11….vampires…the Masonic Lodge and the Illuminati….. Jesus and Mary Magdalene….the Da Vinci Code…. on and on it went!

One man in particular wanted to talk about whether or not Jesus actually existed. He had been told that there is no evidence for Jesus outside of the New Testament, and that someone had made up Jesus Christ hundreds of years after He was said to have lived.

Let’s think about it.

First, if Jesus was never mentioned in any texts outside of the New Testament, we could still easily make the definitive case that He existed and is the Son of God.

How so?

Very simply, because the New Testament Scriptures have been continually verified to be genuine, credible, and historically accurate! Many former skeptics have been converted to Christ by careful examination of the evidences, even some who set out to disprove the Bible.

For example:

“First, let me share with you the story of Sir William M. Ramsay (1851-1939), famed as the once-skeptical New Testament scholar and archaeologist who became a staunch believer in the historical accuracy of the New Testament. He was educated in Scotland (University of Aberdeen) erdeen) and England (Oxford University), during which time he became enamored with the extremely critical scholarship of the F. C. Baur school of Tubingen, Germany. As a result of this, in 1890, he embarked on a journey through the biblical lands in order to confirm the historical errors rors of the New Testament writers. To his great surprise, he found that, at point after point, archeological data and sound historical scholarship confirmed the accuracy of the New Testament authors, and he wrote several important volumes that are still used to this day.95 Subsequent scholarship over the last century has brought further confirmation to Ramsay’s writings.” (Michael Brown, Answering Jewish Objections To Jesus: Volume Four-New Testament Objections, 41 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; Baker Books)

Second, there is ample evidence of Jesus outside of the New Testament from other historically credible documents. One scholar discovered the following while carefully investigating the matter:

“We have examined a total of 45 ancient sources for the life of Jesus, which include 19 early creedal, four archaeological, 17 non-Christian, and five non-New Testament Christian sources. From this data we have enumerated 129 reported facts concerning the life, person, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus, plus the disciples’ earliest message…There can be little doubt that this is a substantial amount of pre-and non-New Testament material for Jesus’ existence and for numerous facts about his life. In light of these reports we can better understand how groundless the speculations are that deny his existence or that postulate only a minimal amount of facts concerning him. Much of ancient history is based on many fewer sources that are much later than the events that they record, as we have seen. While some believe that we know almost nothing about Jesus from ancient, non-New Testament sources, this is plainly not the case. Not only are there many such sources, but Jesus is one of the persons of ancient history concerning whom we have a significant amount of quality data. His is one of the most mentioned and most substantiated lives in ancient times.” (Gary Habermas, The Historical Jesus: Ancient Evidence For The Life Of Christ, 185 (Kindle Edition): College Press Publishing Company, Inc.)

There are many who do not like to acknowledge that Jesus existed. But the simple truth is: whether people like it or not, Jesus did exist.

AND HE STILL DOES!

Luke 1:1-4-Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, 2  just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, 3  it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, 4  that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

Lord, thank You for the impact You have made on the world for goodness. We are grateful for the many evidences You have provided so we may know the certainty of those things in which we have been instructed. Help us to share these truths with others. Amen.
