Matthew 22:16-22-And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. 17  Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18  But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? 19  Show Me the tax money.” So they brought Him a denarius. 20  And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21  They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22  When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way. 23  The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

Once again, we are approaching an opportunity to cast our votes for important leadership roles in our nation. All around, the nervous energy of so many people is at peak intensity. There is a growing sense of fear and turmoil.

With all this in mind, let me share some thoughts with you from the Word of God.

First, no matter what happens, God is in control.

Daniel 2:21-And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.

God still removes and raises up leaders, based on His foreknowledge, power, and good motivations. Whatever happens during these times nothing will take Him by surprise. God allows leaders-and nations-to rise and fall based on His good purposes. He raised up several nations and leaders throughout the Bible. This was done in full harmony with the freewill of His creatures even when they rebelled against Him (Jeremiah 18:1-10). Rest in Him.

Second, the question of Christians choosing to vote or not to vote needs to be approached with grace and wisdom. There are some Christians who believe that it is wrong to cast a vote for any person, regardless of their platform or shortcomings. We do not have to agree or disagree with that belief in order to be courteous and respectful.

John 13:34-35-A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35  By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Romans 15:1-2-We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2  Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.

Whether your neighbor votes or doesn’t vote, be kind.

Third, God’s people often utilized their rights as citizens in order to advance the common good of the people. Joseph used his position and authority to care for his family before the Pharaoh and people of Egypt (Genesis 46-50), Daniel used his standing as a wiseman of Babylon to confer with the king (Daniel 2:14017), Esther used her queenly position to help protect and defend the people (Esther 4-5), Joseph of Arimathea used his position to claim the Body of Jesus (Matthew 27:57-66), and Paul used his rights as a Roman citizen to advocate the Gospel (Acts 22:25-30; 25:11). If a Christian chooses to utilize his privilege of voting to promote greater good and biblical values that is his prerogative.

Fourth, be gracious towards others who choose to vote differently then you do. When Paul wrote to the church at Rome, he touched on some of these issues we are discussing today.

Romans 13:6-7-For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7  Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

Paul told the Christians to pay their taxes, even knowing that Roman taxes went to fund such things as abortions, upkeep of pagan temples, and financial support for pagan priests and priestesses who often engaged in homosexual rites as part of their worship to the gods (so-called) that they served (1 Corinthians 8:1-7; 10:19-20). The Apostle says that Christians pay taxes “for conscience sake,” realizing that government often provides good and worthy services for people. Examples include upkeep of roads, sanitation, postal services, police and military enforcement, etc. It is good and right to support government in these things that are good!

What about the things that government does which are evil?

Christians speak out against such, working to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). We do this peacefully (Romans 13;1-5), at the same time speaking the Word in love (Ephesians 4:15), advocating for justice and social reform (Amos 5:24) on behalf of those who are innocent and suffering (Isaiah 1:15-17) and often unable to speak up for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9). At the same time, we pray for the salvation of everyone-including our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-6).

As such, there can be faithful Christians who are Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Support the good in your party and oppose the evil (Amos 5:15; Romans 12:9). So please, show grace towards your neighbors who may choose to vote differently then you do.

Finally, remember that we are pilgrims in this world (1 Chronicles 29:15). Our true Home awaits us (Hebrews 11:13-16), and we are to be lights in this world of darkness (Matthew 5:13-16) to all of our neighbors and the nations of men (Philippians 2:14-16; Revelation 1:20). Keep your focus on the Lord and Heaven, above all things. Let others see the peace of Christ reigning in your heart (Philippians 4:6-7).

Lord, please bless our nation and guide these elections. Help us to trust in You and Your Providence. Amen.
